Sarah Schmalenberger is a Professor of Music at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. She has blended her expertise as a hornist and musicologist to pursue projects distinct for their focus on healing, equity, and community building. After publishing two articles on the effects of breast cancer treatment on female musicians, she pursued a similarly distinct research project on the experiences of female brass musicians. Dr. Schmalenberger hosts an annual workshop, BrassChix, for students and adults, and founded an all-female Swing Sisterhood Big Band. She and her spouse Dave (a drummer in the Twin Cities) enjoy their time off from teaching and gigs at home with their two rescue dogs.
