iWarmUp for Trumpet: Jazz Warm-Ups to be Played with the iReal Pro App

iWarmUp for Trumpet by Bob Lark is appropriate for high school through professional trumpet players.

Welcome to iWarmUp, a unique platform for practicing fundamentals and jazz style, including long tones, lip slurs, articulation, range, chord arpeggiation, scales, and jazz vocabulary. These routines are designed to be performed with accompaniment by the iReal Pro app (sold separately), but you can also reap the benefits by simply playing the exercises with a good old-fashioned metronome.

You can personalize iWarmUp to fit your needs. Beginning students can play the easier exercises at a slower tempo and skip the hard ones, while the most advanced college students and professionals can challenge themselves appropriately with faster tempos on the more difficult excerpts. Pick and choose from the excerpts that you enjoy and benefit from the most, omitting certain exercises of your choice if you are crunched for time on a given day. Improvise a chorus or two using the pitches in the exercise as a guide. Best of all, create your own custom iWarmUp chapter for that big solo you’ve got coming up on the next jazz band concert.

iWarmUp can also be used in a group setting. No jazz experience is needed in order to use iWarmUp, which provides a change of pace for classical trumpet players. “Hard core” jazzers will immediately recognize the method’s applicability to their craft.

"I am constantly searching for techniques to make my trumpet practice time more interesting and efficient. iWarmUp for Trumpet along with the iReal Pro app saves me valuable time in my improvisation practice while providing a fun and versatile method of doing so. I can now change keys as well as tempos! iWarmUp for trumpet also adapts nicely for any long tone and articulation practice. iWarmUp for trumpet will be a 'must' for all of my students!” - Mike Williams, Lead Trumpeter, The Count Basie Orchestra

"iWarmUp is a well thought out primer for making warming up fun and constructive in many ways at the same time! Utilizing a play along app (iReal Pro), the student will improve intonation, time, ear training, voice leading, and overall conception while warming up! The student is also not locked into having to play the same routine every day. A quite novel approach to trumpet fundamentals which I heartily recommend!" - Randy Brecker, International Recording Artist and Soloist

“iWarmUp does a great job in giving structure to the development of resolution and cadence points through guide tones. The exercises develop this technique through a gradual increase in rhythmic activity for each chorus, while at the same time developing the players’ aural skills so they can hear how chord structures work together. The included songs are some of the most popular standards played on countless sessions and make for a great gateway into the world of jazz phrasing and aesthetic for beginners, classical performers, and seasoned pros alike. One nice aspect of this book is that you can continually develop your skills by increasing tempos and extending your lines by expanding the core guide tones that bring logic to your improvisation. Time to practice and have some fun at the same time!” - Kim Pensyl, Jazz Studies and Commercial Music Production, College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati
